Image shows a class 50 ‘Lion’ plate in its unfinished state.
To complete the nameplate, firstly add two small screws to the small pilot holes in the top template towards each end (Do not screw through! This will allow you to lift the template up once you have secured the border and letters in place). You will need to glue the letters and outer border to the base, PVA is all you need, and use the top template as a guide. Once it starts to dry, carefully remove top template. Now give the nameplate some light coats of primer to build up the layers. Allow the primer to dry for a minimun of 24hrs. Lightly sand and REPEAT this process until happy with the result. You can then spray/brush paint it. I don’t mask the letters as you want the plate colour to go up the edges of the letters unless you prefer to simply paint the letters/borders separately in its own colour and then simply glue them into place using the template. Allow to dry fully.
I use a Plastikote primer and top coat for the nameplate and once this has been given time to dry thoroughly , simply brush (carefully) on the top of each letter with Hammerite smooth silver paint to finish. You will need two coats of paint. Nameplates were normally either in red or black background with silver lettering and border.
