PLEASE NOTE – SOME PARTS OF THIS LASER KIT ARE VERY FRAGILE – HANDLE WITH CARE!

Introduction

Welcome to our video tutorials on how to build the above kits. Please check your kit for all parts prior to building and read the instructions. These are included in the kit and listed below for each video tutorial.

Please take your time in building this kit and we recommend doing it over a few evenings or weekends and at the end of the tutorials. you will have made your depot kit.

part one – base fitting

BASE FITTING INSTRUCTIONS (FOR RLL-620-3RS ONLY)

  • HANDLE THE TOP ENGRAVED PIECE VERY CAREFULLY as the inner edges where it has been engraved is very thin. It is actually easier to turn this base upside down and work on. Sand the engraved edges slightly to remove any residue left.
  • The base (bottom piece) and base (top piece -engraved section) require gluing together. Spread some PVA onto the bottom base plate, spreading the glue across the whole area, then offer up to the top base to fit. Make sure that the edges of both pieces are flush with each other and that the cross member inserts around the edges are fully aligned to allow the supports to fit nicely later on. Wipe any excess glue off around the base with a damp sponge.

  • Once fully dried, you can primer/paint the base in the colour/s of your choice along with the centre track strips (these will need gluing to your track). Weather accordingly if required.
  • We do NOT recommend that you glue this base to the rest of the depot shed as it will stop you from lifting the shed up to gain access, and you will only have access from within the roof area- this will be restricted due to the roof cross members.
  • The bottom base however, could be glued/pinned to your baseboard. Make sure that you insert your track to make sure it fits nicely before gluing down! The 3 inner strips can then be glued in place. Check alignment and you may need to lightly sand the edges of these strips if painted.

    • part two – Priming

    Get the skeleton framework of the kit; two side panels, rear end panel, depot front panel and the two roof panels and primer the insides of each section.
    PLEASE NOTE: The side panels – the side entrance door should be at the depot entrance of the shed on BOTH sides. The roof cross members will NOT fit to the base if you get this around the wrong way! (applicable to the full kit with base)
    We used a grey primer (Halfords Car Primer) for the internal walls but it can be painted in a different colour if preferred. Allow to dry, then lightly sand to give the next coat a key. 2-3 additional coats in total should be enough.
    (Optional – Once fully dried, you can give the internal walls a light sanding.)
    Do not sand the internal sections of the roof panels as this will give grip to the depot edge when placing the roof on and stop it sliding (unless of course, you are gluing these in place)
    Where the holes are in the side panels, end panel and depot door panel, for other parts of the kit to fit into, you may need to use a small file to get rid of any paint that may have decreased the size of the gap during painting, as all parts are a snug fit….. PLEASE TEST!

    part three – Priming

    Prime all roof trusses in the colour of your choice. The best option here is to add some masking tape to the insets of the down supports to stop paint getting on them and then stick them down on a flat surface and use the tape to stick to the surface. This way, when spraying them, they won’t blow away! Allow to dry and then repeat the process on the other side. However, the two end roof trusses will only need spray priming on one side as the other side will be glued to the end section. Also, the depot door end section will require the diagonal support bars to be cut to allow it to fit around the edge of the end top boxes, so cut these with a sharp craft knife. You may then need to lightly sand around the cut off section on the frame/down support to make it smooth and then put the primer on. Allow to dry fully before assembling to end sections.(We’ll be fitting these a bit later on)

    part four – Roof Framing

  • As you have already primed the interior sides of the two roof panels, now the top sides need to be primed in grey (we use Halfords Grey Car Primer). Unless you mask the window frame accordingly, there is likely to be some paint bleed (unless you’ve painted the under-side grey too!) but feel this could be touched in with a brush if needed. Allow to dry. Using a sand block (or similar), lightly sand the panel to smooth the surface.

  • Now fit the roof exterior framework piece on to the roof panel (THIS ONLY GOES ONE WAY AROUND – CHECK FIRST!) The engraved centres of the window frames should be facing upwards, so make sure that this is correct.Tip the framework upside down and glue underneath the framework panel and then gently lift back up and place onto the top roof section and make sure it is aligned correctly. With a small damp brush, gently wipe away any excess glue that may show….allow to dry.
  • Once fully dried, you can then give the top roof panels a couple of coats of grey primer to blend it all in. Again, allow to dry fully.
  • Add the clear roof window panels with a small amount of glue to the underside around the frame and offer up the panels and fit. Allow to dry.

    • part five – Making Interior Pack

    *****RLL-620-3RSTR Through Road Kit – Simply duplicate Videos 5, 6, 7 and 12 for both ends of the depot*****

    Make up the internal depot door side panels and top boxes. The side panels fit A to A , B to B and C to C. Use a nice piece of straight wood to rest these parts against to give them their 90 degree angles. These bits are fiddly, especially the sides of the top boxes , so you may need to hold the sections, then add the small end pieces, then glue them. Once rested against the piece of wood, add some more glue with a small brush and allow to dry. You may want to use a sanding block to give the top boxes a light sanding. Paint the top boxes, (we used a metallic silver acrylic paint). Give the top boxes a couple of coats if required. Then paint the door side runners. We used yellow, but could be painted in any colour of your choice. Allow to dry. It may also pay to paint the roof cross members at this point. They are only 2mm square but long and are VERY FRAGILE , so may be tricky to paint, so you could tape the ends down to a flat surface with a small amount of masking tape and spray/brush. (similar to what we did when priming the roof trusses). Allow to dry.

    part six – interior Pack

  • Now that the top boxes and side runners have been painted and are dry, we can paint the inners of these in a bright silver (to look like the inner runner) It is also advisable to mask around the inner edges of the depot entrance doors (up to the small holes around the entrances) and paint silver inside there too, as this will also form part of the inner runner. One dry, offer them up to the depot end section. PUT IN THE SIDE DOOR RUNNERS FIRST! Add a small amount of glue to the inserts and the gently press the runners in making sure they fully fit in. If they do not fit in because of overspray from painting the internal section, gently file the hole to make good and a flush fit for the door side runners. You may also have to lightly sand the inserts on the runners if you have painted these too. Then fit the top boxes, doing exactly as the side runners. Allow all to dry.You may need to do minor touching up to the door runners if you paint over the sides of the runner! Allow to dry.
  • We have included 3 small depot doors for the option to glue in place. They are all the same size, but you can cut these to make them all different and make it look more proto-typical.
    You will need to paint these both sides as they will show. Once dry, add a small amount of glue to the insides of the top box and side runners (be careful not to glue too far down). You may find that with the addition of paint on these door rollers, they may simply slide up the runners and stay there, so may not require gluing. You could also then swap them around from time to time to change the look!

    • part seven – Roof trusses

  • We now go back to the roof trusses. The first one to do is the depot door end section and this roof truss requires its end diagonal supports to be cut to allow this to fit onto the door section. This should have already been done….see 2) Make sure this has been done otherwise the roof truss will NOT fit due to the outer depot door entrances.
    Apply a small amount of glue on the under-side of the roof truss and then gently move into place, using the tops of the top boxes as a rest, you can move the truss to match the edge of the end panel and the sides of the roof. Make sure the side supports fit EXACTLY over the end panel as the side panel will be pushed into place and if it is out of alignment, it will not fit. You can offer up the side panel to check. Allow to dry.
  • Now turning to the depot end panel, repeat the process of adding the roof truss by adding glue to the back and then gently fitting into place. Allow to dry.

    • part eight – Roof Trusses

  • With both depot side panels, check to see if your three middle roof trusses will fit into their appropriate holes. If the holes are too small due to overspray from painting the side panel, gently file out the hole to fit. On the three middle trusses, we glue these to this one panel, pushing in the side supports to fit nice and flush up to the wall. Add a small amount of glue to the outer side of the panel where the inserts to the trusses have come through. Allow these to dry fully before going any further.
  • We can now glue this side panel up to the end of the depot entrance panel, making sure we have a 90 degree angle. If you have a set square, use it. Gently offer up the depot end to the side panel and fit. BE CAREFUL OF THE ROOF TRUSSES! – THEY ARE FRAGILE.
  • Now offer up the other side panel, adding glue to the side panel holes and end section. Start at the depot end and gently move the side panel inwards and insert the roof truss supports into the allocated holes. TAKE YOUR TIME DOING THIS! You may need a small file end to assist pushing the supports in, but we strongly suggest that you have checked the holes allow the supports to fit easily. Once you have this side section in, you can lean the depot end section up against a straight piece of wood to support the depot while you fit the final piece, the depot end section, adding glue to both ends. Once all in place and you are happy that the depot is fully fitted and at 90 degree angles, add a small amount of glue on the external sides to make strong once dried. Allow this to dry fully.

    • part nine – Cross members

  • We can now add the roof cross members. These will need painting previously if required and you may have done these when painting the depot door side runners.
    PLEASE NOTE! THESE WILL ONLY FIT ONE WAY, so make sure you check first.
  • With a pencil, mark on the two edge roof truss ends where you are going to fit the cross members. The top and bottom cross members should ideally be as close to the top/bottom as possible. The two middle cross members should be placed apart to correspond with the roof windows. It is entirely up to you which way you want the roof sections on (subject to you previously cutting the framework edges) . We had them so that the roof windows were closer to the side panels as this will allow future add-ons like roof extractors to come from the top of the roof.
  • The bottom cross member should go down at the edge of the roof, bridging the small gap between the roof and the end panel. Add a tiny amount of glue into the cross member inserts and offer up to the roof trusses. Use a long metal straight ruler, to give the cross member a nice straight line. Then do the same with the top cross members. Allow to dry.
    Having previously marked where you are putting the middle two members, offer these up as previous two. DOUBLE CHECK YOU HAVE NOT FITTED THESE IN THE WRONG PLACE AND THEY SHOW THROUGH THE ROOF WINDOWS!
    Use the metal rule to align straight. Allow to dry.

    • part ten – Cladding

    **TIP** We have now found it better to glue the skeleton frame rather than the card. We explain it in the video.

  • We now come onto decorating the depot external sections with the engraved card enclosed in the kit. Do the depot entrance end first, then the other end, followed by the side panels. Coat the back of the card panels with glue and brush around to make sure it’s all around the edges of the card panel. Gently offer up the depot end section. Use the end of the cross members as a guide to offer up to the front. Gently use your fingers to push the card up against the panel, being careful not to allow any glue to escape. If it does, wipe it away from the card as this will stain/mark the card. Depending on the glue you are using, this may take a while to get it to stick fully, but have patience. Make sure the card fits flush around the depot door openings. Allow to dry.
  • Now do the same with the other end panel, then the side panels. The card should all neatly match up at each corner. Allow to dry

    • part eleven – Edgings

  • The 4 end cappings will need each one folding over. Use a metal ruler to obtain a perfect fold. Add some glue to the backs of the cappings and place on the ends making sure the right one fits! (check the top angles of these are correct) Allow to dry.
  • Offer up the roof panels and align correctly. They should not move due to them being painted underneath and this will allow you to take them off for display should you need.
  • You can now add the roof edge strips and these fit flush with the top of the roof framework. The strip should also fit flush with the end of the side panels, which will make the top of the roof strip protrude up but there is a roof centre capping to add.
  • The two side capping strips can now be added to the edge of the roof framework. Glue the backs and place up to the edge and fit flush. These edge strips should now all match up on the corners nice and flush.
  • If you want the two roof sections to be one, glue the centre roof strip to both sides. This strip will need to be folded with a metal ruler.

    • part twelve – Finishing

  • The side depot doors can be added. Simply glue two doors to each other, making sure the door handles are the right way and opposite each other, allow to dry and paint accordingly. Add a small amount of glue to the inner edge of the side door entrance and fit the door. Then add some glue to the underside of the door edging and offer up and fit. Allow to dry.
  • The three depot entrance doors have an edge strip that folds into to the doors to give it an overall finish. Again, these need to be folded. Add a small amount of glue to the inner sides and offer up to position, hold and allow the glue to start drying. These will need some pressure to adhere so take time to get these right.

    • Congratulations
    You have now completed the 3 road depot kit. We hoped you enjoyed making this kit and it is now time for you to add all your own relevant depot pieces inside the shed and to weather the shed should you wish. As the exterior of this shed is of card (exc. RLL-620-3RS/SF kit), before doing any weathering, we recommend a coat of matt varnish to seal the card. You can then add your own weathering powders etc.
